A similar shaped row of cottages (Herring Row) appears on the 1st Edition 1852 OS Map. Newbyres Row is named after the 16th century Newbyres Castle, the ruins of which lie to the West of Gorebridge. Robert Smith, an architect from Gorebridge, built various buildings in Gorebridge for the Arniston Estate including 13 Hunterfield Road (previously known as the Newbyres Reading Room, see separate listing in Borthwick Parish) where he was also the librarian.
