Description

Muirhead and Rutherford, 1912. 3-storey and attic; 6-bay; terraced; commercial building comprising shops at ground floor and offices above. Edwardian Baroqe design with curved broken-bed pediments and radiating keyblocks to pair of 1st floor windows and segmental pediment to outer right bay to principal (W) elevation. Polished sandstone ashlar to principal elevation. Bracketed shop fascia surmounted by moulded cornice to most of ground floor to principal elevation; moulded cornice and coped parapet to eaves.

W (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: built into sloping ground. Segmental-headed entrance with moulded upper surround and bracket-like keystone to left of centre; panelled timber door with segmental-headed rectangular fanlight; flanking pilasters surmounted by carved brackets supporting moulded cornice. Flanking shopfronts and one to outer right; all with recessed entrances to left; each with glazed timber-framed door with 6-light rectangular fanlight (that to No 6 probably original); full-height replacement shop window over glazed brick base to right. Vennel entry to outer left. Window to each floor to each bay above; those to outer right bay and outer left pair of bays joined vertically by shared architraves, bracketed at 1st floor and with projecting cills; those to outer right have single stone mullion; those to outer left have moulded inner surrounds and radiating keyblocks surmounted by curved broken-bed pediments to 1st floor; smaller keyblocks and aprons to 2nd floor. 2 bays to outer left surmounted by gable with segmental-headed attic window to centre.

2-pane timber sash and case windows to principal (W) elevation. Grey slate roof with platform apex. Coped wallhead stack to S. Cast-iron downpipes with decorative hoppers to principal elevation.

Statement of Interest

The ground floor shopfronts have been sympathetically refurbished to match the original design.
