Description

Circa 1830 with later additions and alterations. Single storey, 3-bay, classically-detailed gate lodge with flat-roofed rear addition forming near T-plan. Coursed, vertically-droved cream sandstone to front and sides; sandstone ashlar dressings; harl-pointed rubble to rear addition. Base course; eaves course; overhanging bracketed eaves. Lugged and architraved margins; sandstone mullions; projecting, painted and stop-chamfered cills.

S (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: timber panelled door centred at ground; letterbox fanlight; classical surround comprising panelled pilasters, plain frieze and cornice. Tripartite windows in bays flanking entrance (narrow side-lights).

W (SIDE) ELEVATION: original 3-bay block to right with blind, round-arched niche at centre; single windows in flanking bays. Flat-roofed addition recessed to outer left with square-headed doorway in coped rubble wall to front.

N (REAR) ELEVATION: not seen 1998.

E (SIDE) ELEVATION: original 3-bay block to left with blind, round-arched niche at centre; single windows in flanking bays. Flat-roofed addition recessed to outer right.

12-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows. Grey slate piended roof. Brick-built central ridge stack; octagonal stacks. Cast-iron rainwater goods.

INTERIOR: not seen 1998.

B Group comprises 'Peelwalls House', 'Peelwalls North Lodge', 'Peelwalls South Lodge' and 'Peelwalls Walled Garden' - see separate list entries. A well-detailed classical gate lodge, still associated with Peelwalls House. The nearby gatepiers, quadrant walls and boundary walls are listed with the house.
