Description

Mid 19th century with later alterations. 2-storey, 2-bay, rectangular-plan, near-symmetrical M-gabled former fish-processing plant with twin ridge ventilators to S. Squared and snecked rubble with segmental brick arches over 1st floor windows.

N (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: full-height, round arch to each gable with opening slightly recessed within. Large, square-headed entrance with windows flanking at ground to each bay; large segmental-arched window at 1st floor; oculus to right gablehead; fish weather-vane to left gablehead. Window in lean-to projection to outer right.

2-pane timber sash and case windows at ground; large, timber-framed windows at 1st floor with boarded upper sections. Grey slate roof; stone ridges; stone skews; cast-iron rainwater goods.

INTERIORS: not seen, 1998.

Statement of Interest

A building of particular interest, this former fish-processing plant represents an important survivor of the once flourishing fishing industry in Kirkwall. Of particular interest are the long ridge ventilators to the rear (S) of the building. The Harbour Street elevation is enlivened by twin round-arched recesses.
