Circa 1850, altered/extended 1933. Terrace comprising pair of single storey farmworkers' cottages, built into slight incline in 2 stages. Symmetrical design. Coursed stugged sandstone, droved at arrises and with droved ashlar dressings and harled rear/S extensions. Architraved surrounds to openings: those to principal and side elevations have semicircular panels at head. Coped gables.
E (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: reversed plans: slightly off-centre entrance with boarded timber door and 2-pane rectangular fanlight to each cottage; 2-light window with timber mullion to inner bay (originally single light, modified 1933); small window towards outer bay.
W (REAR) ELEVATION: single storey, flat-roofed extension to each cottage; each with entrance with narrow flanking windows; additional window to left to No 8.
N AND S ELEVATIONS: single window to each gable end.
Mainly 12 and 8-pane timber sash and case windows. Slate roofs to main body of terrace; flat leaded roofs to rear/W extensions. 2 corniced gablehead stacks; one to centre of ridge; round and decorative octagonal cans. Cast-iron rainwater goods.
INTERIOR: not inspected (1997)
B group with Nos 1-2, 3-4 and 5-6 Swanston village as largely intact group of mid 19th century farm estate workers' cottages (for Mortonhall Estate). They are finely constructed and symmetrically grouped around a central green.
