Description

Possibly mid 18th century with later additions and alterations. Symmetrical 2-storey, 3-bay classically-detailed house with later, 19th century 2 storey wing at rear forming L-plan; further single storey wing adjoined to N. Tooled cream sandstone rubble (extensive pointing in part); sandstone ashlar dressings. Corniced eaves; droved rubble quoins; droved long and short surrounds to openings; projecting cills.

S (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: steps to pedimented entrance centred at ground with timber panelled door, later concave jambs, architraved surround, fluted frieze beneath dentilled pediment; single window aligned at 1st floor; blind oval opening centred in surmounting shallow pediment. Single windows at both floors in flanking bays.

W (SIDE) ELEVATION: original block with single windows at both floors in bay to outer right (blind at 1st floor); single window at ground off-set to left of centre; replacement timber door in bay to outer left; single window aligned above; round-arched window centre beneath apex. Adjoining 2-storey wing with single window at ground off-set to right of centre; single windows at 1st floor in bays to outer left and right. Single storey wing adjoined to outer left with single window in bay to outer right; flat-roofed addition off-set to left of centre.

N (REAR) ELEVATION: single storey wing projecting to outer right; irregularly fenestrated 2-storey block recessed to left.

E (SIDE) ELEVATION: original block with single windows at both floors in bays to outer left and right (blind at 1st floor to right); round arched window centred beneath apex. 2-storey wing recessed to right with single windows at both floors off-set to right of centre. Single storey wing adjoined to outer right with flat-roofed porch to left; single windows in remaining 2-bays to right.

Plate glass, 4-pane and 12-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows. Grey slate roof; raised stone skews; scrolled skewputts; cast-iron rainwater goods. Corniced red brick apex stacks; various circular cans.

INTERIOR: not seen 1998.

BOUNDARY WALL AND GATEPIERS: rubble wall partially enclosing site; pyramidal-capped rubble piers flanking entrance; iron vehicular gate.

Statement of Interest

An impressive farmhouse with much of its original detailing intact - the intricately detailed, pedimented doorpiece being particularly noteworthy. The farmhouse at Swinton Hill bears some similarity (see separate list entry). Rutherfurd notes a Mr John Gibson as farmer here in 1866.
