Dated 1861; 1902 addition to W by D Forbes Smith. Single storey, 5-bay school with Italianate tower. Stugged squared and snecked rubble with droved ashlar dressings. Pedimented doorways, raised margins, relieving arches and some round-headed openings; stone mullions.
NW (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: advanced gable to centre bay with tripartite window and round-headed narrow bipartite opening in finialled gablehead, 2 bipartite windows on return to right; bay to outer left mirrors above, recessed bay between with bipartite window and flanking windows; tripartite window in penultimate bay to right, and further advanced gable to outer right with pedimented doorway, 2-leaf panelled timber door, 2-part fanlight, flanking narrow lights each with window beyond and corbelled stack above in gablehead.
TOWER: 2-stage entrance tower. 1st stage with pedimented doorway, 2-leaf panelled timber door and 2-part fanlight to NW, keystoned round-headed window to NE; engaged to other elevations. Band course giving way to short 2nd stage with slightly recessed panel containing 2 blind quatrefoils below 2 keystoned, trefoil-headed, louvered openings. Mutuled cornice above, and polychrome-slated bellcast roof with tall decorative iron finial.
NE ELEVATION: gabled bay to centre with tripartite window and flanking bipartite windows (that to right altered to single window), round-headed opening as above in gablehead; bipartite window in penultimate bay to left and tripartite window to outer left. Tower (see above) to right of centre with 2 bipartite windows to recessed bays beyond.
SE ELEVATION: asymmetrical elevation with variety of elements including gable to outer right with tripartite window below round-headed opening as above.
SW ELEVATION: 5-bay elevation with asymmetrical fenestration.
uPVC glazing. Grey slates. Coped ashlar stacks and ashlar-coped skews with moulded skewputts; cast-iron downpipes with decorative rainwater hoppers and fixings.
INTERIOR: top lit centre hall with dado and architraved openings. Toilet cubicles with boarded timber doors. Headmaster's study carved timber fireplace and private toilet with original (1902) decorated ceramic toilet pan and wash basin with decorative cast-iron brackets and brass fittings. Room to SW with ceramic-tiled dado, encaustic-tiled floor and ceramic sluice pan.
BOUNDARY WALLS, GATEPIERS AND RAILINGS: low coped rubble boundary walls, some with inset railings. 2 pairs of flat-coped square section ashlar gatepiers to NW.
Currently in use a nursery school, but built as Gallatown School, later becoming Rosslyn School.
