Description

Late 19th century. Asymmetrical 2-storey, 4-bay house with Scots Baronial detailing; crowstepped gable to outer right; engaged polygonal tower to outer left; entrance porch at centre. Squared and snecked bull-faced red sandstone; polished ashlar dressings. Moulded eaves course; crowstepped gables; sandstone mullions; chamfered cills.

NW (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: projecting lean-to porch centred at ground comprising bipartite window facing NW, corniced surround to 2-leaf timber panelled door in re-entrant angle to left; cat-slide dormer above. Corniced single window at ground in bay to left of entrance; decorative strapwork above; cat-slide dormer off-set to left. Engaged tower to outer left with single windows at both floors in each facet (tiered canopy dividing floors); decorative finial surmounting spire. 3 light canted windows at both floors centred beneath crowstepped gable to outer right (tiered canopy dividing floors); timber door set in single storey screen wall adjoined beyond.

NE (SIDE, BENTINCK DRIVE) ELEVATION: single window centred at ground; bipartite window aligned at 1st floor beneath crowstepped gable; single window at ground in bay to outer left. Engaged polygonal tower in bay to outer right (as above).

6-, 8-, 9- and 12-pane upper, plate glass lower timber sash and case glazing; leaded lights to porch. Grey slate roof; crowstepped skews; some original rainwater goods. Apex stacks rebuilt in brick; circular terracotta cans.

INTERIOR: not seen 1997.

BOUNDARY WALLS: low coped squared and snecked bull-faced sandstone wall enclosing site to front; timber pedestrian entry gates; taller coped red brick wall enclosing garden at rear.

Statement of Interest

With its crowstepped gables, small-pane timber windows, decorative strapwork and finialed spire, this imposing, unusually detailed house retains significant architectural interest.
