Description

Early 19th century with additional 2-storey wing to N dated 1872; later alterations and additions. Original 2-storey, 3-bay plain classical style, rectangular-plan house with 2-storey, 3-bay rectangular-plan addition forming T-plan; 2-storey, single bay wing beyond with lean to addition to front, single storey wing at rear. Coursed and whitewashed render; droved and polished sandstone dressings. Raised base course; narrow strip quoins. Sandstone margins; projecting cills; pilastered doorpiece. Surrounding walled garden.

NE (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: step to timber panelled door centred at ground in wing dated 1872; plate glass fanlight; surrounding doorpiece with flanking pilasters, plain frieze, cornice and blocking course; single window aligned at 1st floor. Single windows at both floors in flanking bays. Earlier 2-bay, gabled wing advanced to outer left with single windows at ground and 1st floors in both bays; small attic light off-set to left of centre. Single window at ground in lean-to addition to outer right; single window recessed above.

SE (SIDE) ELEVATION: 3-light corniced, canted windows at ground in bays to outer left and right; single windows in all 3 bays at 1st floor.

SW (REAR) ELEVATION: original house with small attic light off set to right of centre; single windows at both floors in bay to left. 1872 wing with single windows at both floors in bay projecting to right (breaking eaves at 1st floor); single windows at both floors in bay to left. Single windows at both floors in lower, 2-storey wing to outer left.

Plate glass, 12- and 16-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows. Grey slate roofs; raised stone skews; predominantly replacement rainwater goods. Unusually shouldered apex stacks rebuilt in brick to original house; banded brick apex stack to 1872 wing; banded wallhead stack with dentilled cornice at rear; various circular cans.

INTERIOR: not seen 1997.

WALLED GARDEN: near rectangular-plan walled garden surrounding house; coped rubble walls (some red brick facing).

BOUNDARY WALLS, GATEPIERS AND GATES: coped rubble walls enclosing site to NW. Stop-chamfered, square-plan sandstone gatepiers flanking entrance; platformed pyramidal caps; decorative iron gates.

Statement of Interest

An interesting farmhouse in which it is possible to trace the evolutionary stages of building. The original house appears to have been a simple, rectangular-plan structure with minimal decoration. Later additions have proven sympathetic and, together with the surrounding walled garden and square-plan gatepiers, create an impressive whole. Rutherfurd's Register refers to a Joseph Allan Esq. as the proprietor of Quixwood in 1866. The nearby steading and associated farmworkers? cottages are not listed.
