Description

Earlier 19th century (circa 1830) with later additions and alterations. Classically-detailed 2-storey, 3-bay rectangular-plan farmhouse with symmetrical, pedimented entrance front advanced at centre; substantial single storey, L-plan addition at rear circa 1995 (?). Coursed red sandstone to front (polished at ground; droved at 1st floor); polished sandstone dressings; random rubble (predominantly sandstone) to sides and rear. Raised band course at principal floor; raised string course dividing floors. Raised quoins; polished margins; sandstone mullions to tripartite windows (narrow side lights); projecting cills. Painted dry dash rear addition. Single storey garage addition adjoined to right.

S (FRONT) ELEVATION: pedimented bay slightly advanced at centre with steps to part-glazed, 2-leaf timber panelled door at ground; flanking pilasters; plate glass, semicircular fanlight set in architraved and keystoned surround; corniced, columnar doorpiece; single window aligned at 1st floor. Tripartite windows at both floors in flanking bays (corniced at ground). Single storey garage block recessed to outer right.

N (REAR) ELEVATION: projecting single storey addition off-set to right of centre; recessed lean-to addition in bays to left; regularly disposed single windows in 3 bays at 1st floor (small single window in penultimate bay to outer left). Single bay garage block recessed to outer left.

Modern windows throughout. Graded grey slate piended roof; grey slate roof to later addition. Brick built wallhead stacks to E and W; various circular cans,

INTERIOR: not seen 1997.

ENTRANCE WALLS AND GATES: splayed and coped sandstone walls flanking entrance; square-plan gatepiers; pyramidal caps; gates missing.

Statement of Interest

An unusually grand farmhouse, from the front at least, noted in Rutherfurd's 1866 Directory. Despite its modern windows and large rear addition, Jardinefield has retained significant architectural interest in its more permanent and classical fabric. The pedimented entrance front is particularly impressive with its corniced, columnar doorpiece and tripartite windows. The use of polished sandstone at ground and droved sandstone above is also interesting. It is the sort of design inspired by THE RUDIMENTS OF ARCHITECTURE (1773) widely available around 1800. Neither the associated steading nor the nearby former farmworkers' cottages are listed.
