Description

Circa 1830. Farmhouse and steading for Sundrum Castle. Two main facing ranges.

FARMHOUSE: plain 2-storey U-planned block. 5 bays with single bay advanced wings. Earlier building possibly re-cast and wings with cottage attached to W added circa 1830. Main front of central section coursed ashlar, wings and attached cottage rubble. Main cavetto cornice. Mostly sash and case windows. Axial stacks. Piended slate roofs. Rear elevation rubble.

Various window sizes, generally symmetrical. Outer wall of former pig sty (?) attached to N.

STEADING: dated 1831. 2 storey range of 2-4-2 bays with higher central section. Ramped to single storey rear. Coursed snecked rubble with ashlar dressings. Ground floor 5 four-centred arches carrying plain upper floor with vertical ventilation slits and large central loft access door. Eastern section with living accommodation over farm offices. End stacks. Slate roofs.

REAR ELEVATION: ventilation slots, various door and window openings, large central doorway. Largely intact rubble horse mill with slated, zinc-capped roof and weathervane. Roof timbers intact. Remains of

gas house to north of steading.

Statement of Interest

The farmhouse range has been much altered over the years. The original building may have consisted of a factor's house with attached stables with the house late downgraded for agricultural purposes but later brought back into more prestigious residential use.
