Brierylaw Cemetery formally laid out in grid format with bridge to SE corner crossing Dean Burn leading to Shawfield Cemetery formed on radial format. Gravestones and monuments dating from later 1870s. Enclosure (see Notes) to N side of Brierylaw Cemetery: red sandstone dwarf wall forming small enclosure with square-plan piers with scrolled coping and roundels near top of each. Intricate wrought-iron railings. Rectangular gravestone with bas-relief crucifix in memory of Hugh Morris of Broadmeadows, died April 1900 and his wife Margaret, died August 1914, their children Hugh (d. January 1939), John (d. December 1943), William (d. December 1943) and Margaret Graham (d. April 1958). Rectangular wall-mounted stone to right, dedicated to memory of Anna Gertrude Montgomerie Hamilton (d. February 1937), and others.
BOUNDARY WALLS, QUADRANTS, RAILINGS, GATES AND GATEPIERS: rubble with roughly rounded sandstone coping. Squared whinstone coped quadrants with fine arrow shaft-head cast-iron railings to S; octagonal-plan gatepiers with pyramidal coping; 2-leaf cast-iron vehicular gates.
Brierylaw cemetery and lodge appear on 3rd edition OS map (1897). Shawfield Cemetery was added at a later date. The enclosure shows a strong Arts and Crafts feeling in the design of the piers and materials. It is the most distinctive of the stones in the cemeteries. See separate listing for the gatepiers and lodge.
