Mid 19th century (possibly incorporating earlier fabric) with later additions and alterations. 2-storey with attic, 3-bay terraced tenement with shop accommodation at ground; sited on ground falling to NE. Painted droved ashlar with polished ashlar dressings at ground; painted squared whinstone with polished ashlar margins, droved ashlar tails to margins; various materials utilised in full-height additions to rear. Band course at lintel-height of ground; cill course to 1st floor windows; eaves course.
NE (MARKET PLACE) ELEVATION: regularly disposed bays at 1st floor, each with window. Modern glazed door to centre with plate glass rectangular fanlight above; plate glass fixed-pane shop window in bay to left and to partly blinded in bay to right; panelled door to outer left.
BUILDINGS IN CLOSE TO REAR: 4 2-storey terraced houses projecting at right angles from Market Place front, lining close, stepping down; each 3-bay except 2-bay house to NE. 2 harled; 1 squared whinstone with red sandstone dressings; 1 cement-rendered.
Modern glazing at 1st floor of NE elevation. Slate roof with brick mutual stacks. Half-piended dormers to outer bays of NE elevation. Slate roof to additions to rear of varying ridge-height and pitch.
INTERIOR: not seen, 1996.
The site was built upon in 1823, with the wynd and the adjoining buildings to SW.
