Later 19th century with later additions and alterations. 3-storey, 3-bay terraced tenement with shop accommodation at ground; advanced from NW elevation of No 25 Market Place, the Cross Keys. Painted ashlar at ground; painted squared and snecked whinstone to upper storeys with polished ashlar raised margins; whinstone rubble to rear with droved red sandstone dressings. Cornice between ground and 1st floor; eaves course; slightly raised long and short quoins.
NW (MARKET PLACE) ELEVATION: deep-set modern door to centre at ground with window to each floor above, breaking eaves at 2nd floor, with ashlar coped dormerhead. Mirrored flanking bays with narrow fixed-pane plate glass shop windows to inner and broader fixed-pane window to outer ; window to each floor above.
SE ELEVATION: full-height addition to rear.
Plate glass timber sash and case windows. Slate roof (pitch altered in recent years, 1996). Harled, coped wallhead stack to SW.
INTERIOR: not seen, 1996.
The building on this site in 1865 was the Black Bull (public house). The windows at 2nd floor did not have dormerheads in circa 1900, and there was a different arrangement at ground.
