Mid to later 18th century; recast and converted by Ian Lindsay & Partners, circa 1970. 2-storey, 2-bay cottage forming terrace end; gable to Pier Place. Harled and limewashed; raised and painted concrete surrounds to openings; exterior stair with timber railings to 1st floor.
E (GREAT MICHAEL SQUARE) ELEVATION: stairs to 1st floor entrance in central bay; 2-leaf timber boarded door; flanking single windows. Single window to ground in stair recess to left; boarded storage door beneath stair.
W (FISHMARKET SQUARE) ELEVATION: recessed 1st floor; regularly fenestrated to both floors.
N (PIER PLACE) ELEVATION: single window to 1st floor in bay to outer left.
12-pane timber sash and case windows to all elevations. Machine-made red pantiled roof with grey slate easing course and precast concrete skews. Harled apex stack to N with precast concrete cope and circular cans.
B Group with Nos 1-8 Fishmarket Square and No 40 Main Street (see separate list entries). Note the existence of single-storey additions to the rear of both No 40 and 42 shown in the 1876 Ordnance Survey map. These were demolished by Ian Lindsay & Partners. One of many properties refurbished by the practice during the 1970s this block displays characteristics common to all - standard detailing to the stair railing; harled and limewashed walls, precast concrete copes and skews, red pantiles and new timber sash and case windows. Note throughout however, the attempt to retain the Scottish fishing village vernacular with exterior stairs, modest facades and an inherent simplicity. Compare with Cross Wynd, Falkland or St Moran?s, Fife - both of which were recorded by Lindsay. Despite harsh detailing and element of standardisation, the practice?s Newhaven work should be acknowledged as a pioneering attempt to conserve and improve an entire fishing village. A substantial project with a clear philosophy, it contrasts with more recent restoration attempts and thus, illustrates the differing and developing attitudes towards conservation. Previously listed as No 15 Great Michael Square with No 16 and 7-9 Fishmarket Square.
