Late 18th to early 19th century. 2-storey, 3-bay, rectangular-plan classical farmhouse on ground falling to N. Harled with quoin strips and stone margins.
S (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: deep-set panelled timber door with plate glass fanlight at centre in corniced, concave-moulded doorcase below Venetian window at 1st floor (outer lights blinded); windows in flanking bays.
N ELEVATION: steps up to timber door in bay to right of centre, window to outer right and bipartite window to left; small stair(?) window at centre and windows to outer bays at 1st floor.
W ELEVATION: windows to right at ground and to left at 1st floor, small attic window in gablehead.
E ELEVATION: small attic window in gablehead.
12- and 15-pane glazing patterns in timber sash and case windows throughout. Graded grey slates. Coped brick stacks with full complement of polygonal cans and thackstanes, ashlar coped skews. Cast-iron downpipes and decorative rainwater hoppers.
Little Raith belonged, in the 1830?s, to R Ferguson Esq, of Cluny Coal, whose "wooded properties" extended to "73 acres, 3 roods, 9 falls", second only to Lord Minto. The NSA continues "Our farm-steads have been much improved; and those on the property of Captain Wemyss and Mr Ferguson of Raith are the best" (p168).
