Description

Circa 1800. 2-storey, 3-bay symmetrical house of rectangular plan. Random rubble walls with droved ashlar dressings. Projecting cills at margined windows. Stugged sandstone gabled porch at ground in centre bay; 2-leaf vertically-boarded timber door with plate glass fanlight; 12-pane border glazed timber fixed-lights with stained glass to side elevations. Regular fenestration in flanking bays and at 1st floor. Blank N gable, single storey lean-to to S gable with single window above at right. Irregularly fenestrated rear elevation.

Timber sash and case windows, predominantly 12-pane, with 4-pane to S gable and lean-to. Purple-grey slate roof with cast-iron downpipe with hopper to right. Stugged sandstone apex stacks, coped, with circular cans. Cement-rendered skew copes to principal gables, ashlar to porch.

Stugged and droved ashlar gatepiers (to street) with bases and corniced pyramidal caps flanking stone steps accessing flagged terrace; stugged sandstone wall flanking gate surmounted by ashlar cope and cast-iron railings. Random rubble wall to S incorporating wall of lean-to.

Statement of Interest

A smart house from this period of prosperity in Lerwick, with many original features surviving. Address amended from 17 Hillhead, November 2005.
