Description

18th century. 2-storey tenement with 2-bay gable to Commercial Street and 3-bay elevations to closes flanking to N and S. Harl-pointed and lined stugged sandstone walls (painted to E gable) with droved ashlar dressings. Projecting cills at windows.

E (COMMERCIAL STREET) ELEVATION: asymmetrical, panelled and glazed shop door with plate glass fanlight in bay at left; 4-pane fixed-light shop window in bay at right. Regular fenestration at 1st floor.

S ELEVATION: infilled door at centre with 4-pane hoppered timber window to left. Elevation canted forward to outer left with door and shop window in faces.

N ELEVATION: elevation advanced and curved to right of centre, with small windows at ground and 1st floor to outer right; doorways flanking re-entrant angle, one infilled, other with vertically-boarded timber door with small window above.

Timber sash and case windows at 1st floor of gable, modern glazing elsewhere. Corrugated sheet roof to principal pitches, curved and piended stone-clad roof to N addition. Stugged sandstone apex stack with cope to E gable, harled and coped apex stack with circular cans to W.

STEPS: flagged steps rising to W along N elevation with concrete covered dwarf wall surmounted by cast-iron handrail with ball finialled stanchions.

Statement of Interest

With its gabled neighbour at No 173, this building is an essential part of the fabric of the N end of Commercial Street.
