Description

Late 18th century; considerable 19th century alterations. Former 3-storey 3-bay house extended substantially to 4-storey and double attic. Droved sandstone with painted timber dressings. Modern built out shop at ground. Large single canted window at 1st floor with bracketed cornice. Corniced and architraved windows at 2nd floor; plain at 3rd; eaves cornice and parapet, interrupted by pair of crude neo-Egyptian timber wallhead dormers; mansard roof continued as full-width timber box dormer, with 7 lights and central pediment.

Timber sash and case plate glass windows. Grey slates; ashlar coped skews; stone stacks.

INTERIOR: modern retail unit at ground.

Statement of Interest

Architraves removed at 2nd floor. Incorporates part of the original fabric of Edinburgh?s New Town, one of the most important and best preserved examples of urban planning in Britain.
