Description

1784-90; remodelled by David Cousin, 1868. 3-storey and mansard attic 6-bay offices with projecting shops at ground. Droved cream ashlar sandstone with later polished dressings. At ground, 5 irregular bays with pilasters, mutuled cornice and pierced balustrade; 3 plate glass shopfronts inserted with own access, that to right flanked by pair of deeply chamfered round-arched doorpieces with wrought-iron screens at head. 1st and 2nd floor windows with later bracketed architraves, corniced at 1st floor; cornice and parapet containing 6 segmental-headed wallhead dormers with acroteria; all architraves with incised decoration.

Plate glass timber sash and case windows. Ashlar coped skews; rendered stacks; grey slates.

INTERIOR: not seen 1995.

A Group with Nos 35-43 (odd nos) Hanover Street as a significant surviving part of the original fabric of Edinburgh's New Town, one of the most important and best preserved examples of urban planning in Britain.
