Description

1792-4; subsequent alterations. 3-storey and attic 4-bay classical former house with flat above, now with shops built out at ground. Droved sandstone ashlar. Bays irregularly spaced. 2 shops and door with 12-pane fanlight to upper floors built out at ground; panelled pilasters and cornice. Upper floors with margin drafts. Eaves cornice. Later 19th century full-width dormer incorporates pair of canted windows.

Plate glass timber sash and case windows; 4-pane to dormers. Ashlar coped skews; rebuilt stone stack; grey slates.

INTERIOR: much altered at ground, but possibly with surviving features above.

Statement of Interest

A Group with Nos 21-29 (odd nos) Castle Street as a significant surviving part of the original fabric of Edinburgh?s New Town, one of the most important and best preserved examples of urban planning in Britain.
