Dated 1816. Octagonal, granite market cross circa 40 high. Set on octagonal paving 4 steps to buttressed pedestal, off-set buttresses dividing pointed arch panels; frieze and cornice above; octagonal base to shaft above with gablet caps to each face; gablet caps to octagonal shaft bearing cross finial. Plaque to W face of pedestal.
Sited at W end of The Square, between North and South Main Streets, the new market cross is paired with the old market cross. It was formerly surrounded by railings, Groome describes the Monument as being constructed to commemorate the Battle of Waterloo.
