Description

Circa 1840. Canted terrace of 2-storey, 2-bay, 3-bay and 4-bay symmetrical, rectangular-plan, gabled houses. SW facing onto Argyle Square. Coursed Caithness stone slabs, some harled. Regular fenestration, irregular to rear.

NO 51: PRINCIPAL ELEVATION: 3-bay, harled and lined as ashlar. Channelled quoins, base course, projecting window margins with incised decoration. Door to centre, console bracketed cornice above. NW (SIDE) ELEVATION: blind gable end.

NO 52: PRINCIPAL ELEVATION: 3-bay, harled and lined as ashlar. Channelled quoins, base course, projecting window margins with incised decoration. Panelled door to centre, console bracketed cornice above. Canted dormers, small rooflight to centre, felt tiles.

NO 53: PRINCIPAL ELEVATION: 3-bay, harled. Channelled quoins, base course, projecting window margins with incised decoration. Door to centre, console bracketed cornice above. Large rooflights.

NO 54: PRINCIPAL ELEVATION: 4 narrow bays, door to left, blocked pend to outer right, blocked windows to 2nd and 4th bay of upper storey. Canted dormer to right, small rooflight to left.

NO 55: PRINCIPAL ELEVATION: 4 narrow bays, door to centre right, pend to outer right, blocked windows to 2nd and 4th bay of upper storey.

NO 57: PRINCIPAL ELEVATION: 3-bay, door to centre. Canted dormer to left.

NO 58: PRINCIPAL ELEVATION: 2-bay, door to left, blocked pend to centre. Canted dormer to right.

NO 59: PRINCIPAL ELEVATION: 5-bay, door to centre, blocked pend and widow above to flanking bays. Modern box dormers. SE (SIDE) ELEVATION: blind gable end.

INTERIORS: not seen 2001.

Plate glass sash and case windows. Grey slates, lead flashing. Coped gable stacks, cast-iron rainwater goods.

The Group listing is in recognition of the exceptional group value of these buildings as the core of Thomas Telford's 1809 scheme for the new town plan of Pulteneytown for the British Fisheries Society.
