Description

Mid 19th century, probably incorporating late 18th century fabric (see Notes). 2-storey, 3-bay, terraced house converted to 2 flatted dwellings, with stone-pedimented dormerheads, in Stonehaven's New Town. Harled with stone margins to N and squared rubble with Aberdeen bond and stugged margins to S.

N ELEVATION: ground floor with boarded timber door off-centre left and window in bay to left, further boarded timber door with 2-pane fanlight to right and window beyond. Tall stair window off-centre right and 2 1st floor windows breaking eaves into stone pediments.

S (CARRON TERRACE) ELEVATION: centre bay at ground with timber door and 2-pane fanlight, window in bay to right and later square-plan tripartite window projecting at left; 2 windows to 1st floor each breaking eaves into stone-finialled pediment.

4-pane glazing pattern in timber sash and case windows; 6-pane etched glass stair window with coloured margins. Grey slates. Coped squared rubble stacks with thackstanes and cans, some polygonal. Ashlar-coped skews.

INTERIOR: No 41 Cameron Street (3 Carron Terrace) with decorative plasterwork cornices, screen door with etched glass, decorative cast-iron balusters and timber fire surround.

BOUNDARY WALLS: stepped, flat-coped, rubble boundary walls.

Statement of Interest

Group with Nos 45 - 51 Cameron Street and 1, 2 and 3 Carron Terrace, a fine early terrace which forms part of the New Town of Stonehaven laid out by Robert Barclay of Ury in 1797 on the estate of Arduthie which had been purchased by his father in 1759. The building date of No 3 Carron Terrace may coincide with the earlier (separately listed) Nos 1 and 2 Carron Terrace. Thus the 19th century south elevation probably disguises an 18th century building, with the Cameron Street elevation less heavily re-worked and retaining an early stair window.
