Dated 1632 and 1674. Courtyard plan, 2/3-storey and attics
U-plan closed by front wall with heavily by rusticated arched
entrance, gateway on Castle Wynd. Original part North-East
angle 16th century reconstructed later, Short South wing and
then a North wing to Castle Wynd added late 16th/early 17th
century. Circa 1630-2, new East range and south range begun
(architect reputed Sir Anthony Alexander) Circa 1633-40
upper floors of west end of North range added: 1674 South
west part of South range and South wing demolished to ground
floor level 1852) added. Rubble-built (harl stripped 1975-6)
with margins, outstandingly rich detail, conical-roofed stair
towers, and Roman doric pilastered porch in court, pedimented
and strapworked heads to windows pilastered dormers and
armorial cartouche E range, some outstanding interior work
with balustraded timber stair, pedimented doorcases
sculptured chimneypieces and painted decoration.
Crown property. Belonged to Sir William Alexander, Earl of Stirling from circa 1630 until his death in 1640. Purchased by 1st Marquess of Argyll 1655. Became military hospital in late 18th century.
