Description

Circa 1815. 2-storey, 3-bay house terminating irregular terrace on ground falling to rear. Yellow/grey sandstone ashlar to front (stone-cleaned), rendered to side, squared rubble to rear. Base course, 1st floor cill band course, eaves cornice and blocking course. Raised quoins.

E (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: symmetrical. Entrance to centre, rectangular fanlight, deep-set modern door. Window centred above at 1st floor. Bays flanking with windows at ground and 1st floor.

N ELEVATION: adjoining 38 Bridge Street.

S ELEVATION: single bay gable end.

Modern replacement windows. Grey slate pitched roof, coped skews. Brick gablehead stacks.

BOUNDARY WALLS: rubble boundary walls to rear (W).

Statement of Interest

No 40 is shown on Wood's map as being the property of Mr Anderson, who was possibly the owner of Theatre Royal at No 36. These two houses are probably the oldest surviving on the west side of Bridge Street. Part of the 22-40 (Even Nos) Bridge Street B Group.
