Description

John Sim, dated 1900. 2-storey and attic, gable fronted Bank premises with bold Tudor and Flemish features. Sandstone ashlar, base course, frieze above ground floor, cornice and moulding above 1st floor. Architraved margins and battered cills.

NW (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: 2 broad bays formed by attached, half octagonal columns rising from ground to eaves. Each bay at ground with paired windows with 4-centred arched heads and hoodmoulds, that to right serving as entrance and with architrave enriched with acorn and oak leaf carvings. Frieze above ground with deep carvings including thistle and inscribed "Savings Bank". Each bay at 1st floor with full-width 4-centred arches and 4 transomed round-arched lights set within. Carved, stone griffons upon octagonal column capitals, flanking gablehead. 2 smaller windows in gablehead with 4-centred arched heads""1900". Octagonal finials.

NE ELEVATION: adjoining 12/13 Castle Place.

SW ELEVATION: adjoining 16 Castle Place.

Timber sash and case, plate glass windows. Tall and broad, corniced wallhead stack to SW with full complement of polygonal cans.

INTERIOR: modernized ground floor, upper floors not seen 1998.

Statement of Interest

The prolific Montrose architect John Sim designed and submitted plans for this building in April 1899.
