granite plinth. Large inscribed slate plaques mounted in N

Cross and plinth mounted on circular crenellated platform
approached by flight of steps.
Carving on apex of cross depicts figure on horseback below

Plaque on S face of plinth inscribed 'Macduff Cross rebuilt
Macduff by the Earl of Fife 1783 when that place was
constituted a Royal Burgh by Geo IIId' (and in oval recess)'
MAY IT FLOURISH and long increase in NUMBERS and Opulence'.
Plaque in N face inscribed 'WHILE its INHABITANTS GAINS (SIC)
THE BLESSING OF LIFE BY INDUSTRY DILIGENCE AND TEMPORANCE'.
Commanding site overlooking Macduff. Plaque on viewpoint
records the bi-centenary of Macduff in 1983 when the area
appears to have been laid out in present form with steps to
platform surrounding cross.
Macduff, was formally established by the Earl of Fife in
1732, though there has been a small fishing hamlet on site
before that time. In its early days it was called Down or
Doune but the name was changed to Macduff when constituted a
burgh in 1783.
Original date of the cross fragments not known.
