Description

1774, interior recast 1830 and 1870 rectangular plan with
projecting tower at east. Body of church stuccoed with
rusticated quoins. 6-stage rubble built tower with
rusticated and painted quoins and band courses to lower
3 stages: angle margins to 4th, clock dated 1774 on each
face in 5th stage; moulded set backs to 6th, which has
keystoned, round-headed, louvred openings. Cornice above
with urns at angles, octagonal dome, capped with obelisk
and weather-vane. Round-headed entrance on east face with
coved reveals and Gibbs surround. Above, statue of
William Wallace, 1817 by Robert Forrest, standing on
corbelled plinth and under pinnacled canopy. Body of
Church has 5 tall round-headed windows with margins,
imposts and keystones. Shallow set-back above and 5
gallery windows of smaller but similar design, in both
north and south elevations. Similar windows in gable end
well flanking tower. Square headed door at south east with
Gibbs surround. Piended slate roof.
Town bell, founded 1110, recast 1659, 1740 and 1830,
brought to the "in kirk" in 1777.
