Early 19th century. 3-storey, 3-window, stugged red ashlar
and slate, modern ground floor shops, original doorpiece with
fanlight.
B group.
The central area of Kirriemuir still substantially retains
the warm red sandstone character of the period of Sir J.M.
Barrie's novels. Most of the shop fronts are either original
or mid-Victorian. Only the Parish Church and the British
Linen Bank are of high architectural interest in the academic
sense. The remainder is well-proportioned provincial Georgian
vernacular with a few Victorian replacements. But the
internal grouping and spaces have much character and
atmosphere while the outward grouping on a high bank in the
bend of the Gairie Burn is picturesque. A fair number of
items are included for group value only, i.e. unity of
character and material.
