Description

18th century with later alterations and additions. Single storey and attic row of 4 small, rectangular-plan houses running along close. Number 2 to E end: 2-bay gable to street with 4-bay, irregular N elevation to close. Number 4 adjoining to E: near-symmetrical 3-bay with flat-roofed dormer breaking eaves. Number 6, adjoining to E: roofless, irregular 3-bay, (5-bay at ground). Number 8 to W end: near-symmetrical, crowstepped-gabled 3-bay with pitched-roofed dormers breaking eaves; ball-finialled W gable. Harled. Eaves course to Number 8. Boarded openings to Numbers 4 and 6.

E (VICTORIA STREET) ELEVATION: window in each bay at ground; attic window, offset to right, above; gablehead stack.

N (GUNN'S CLOSE) ELEVATION: NUMBER 2: deep-set door at ground in bay to centre with window flanking to right. Window at ground in bay to outer left. Window at each floor in bay to outer right. NUMBER 4: doorway at ground in bay to centre; window above. Window at ground in bay to right; dormer above. Non-aligned window at ground with dormer above in bay to left. NUMBER 6: doorway at ground in bay to centre. Window at each floor in each bay to left. 2, closely set windows at ground in bays to right; single window above. NUMBER 8: modern, part-glazed door at ground in bay to centre with window flanking to right; small window at 1st floor above. Window at ground with dormer window above in bay to outer right. 2 windows, closely set, at ground in bay to left; dormer window above.

W (GABLE TO NUMBER 8) ELEVATION: 2-bay: modern part-glazed door at ground in bay to left. Window in bay to right.

Variety of glazing patterns including timber-framed windows with top hung upper lights; fixed timber framed windows; 4-pane timber sash and case windows. Grey slate roof to Number 2; traditional graded stone tiled roof to Number 4; modern grey concrete tiled roof to Number 8; harled, coped gablehead stack to E, (Victoria Street) gable; common harled and corniced ridge stacks; harled coped stack to Number 8; uPVC rainwater goods to Numbers 2 and 8; cast-iron rainwater goods to Number 4.

INTERIORS: not seen, 1998.

Statement of Interest

With its gabled end to Victoria Street, this row of cottages which make up the south side of Gunn's Close retains its traditional scale and arrangement along a close. Number 4 retains its traditional graded stone slate roof.
