Description

Dated 1852, Gateway in form of Triumphal Arch; tall keyblocked archway between paired Tuscan pilasters on socles; cornice and blocking course break forward over pilasters; central raised block with inset table bearing inscription. Spandrels of arch contain armorial carvings. Original gates removed from the main gate as well as from the pedestrian arches which flank it. Railings removed from the serpentine die-walls of the approach.

Statement of Interest

Erected as a public mark of gratitude for the gift of Shedden Park by Mrs Robertson of Ednam House in 1851 in memory of her nephew Robert Shedden (1820-49) who died in the search for Sir John Franklin. Group with item 140.
