Description

1870. Symmetrical 4-storey 3-bay Baronial Police Station; coursed bull-faced cream sandstone with ashlar dressings; tabbed margins, stop-chamfered reveals.

NW (CASTLEGATE) ELEVATION: at centre, steps to 2-leaf panelled door with semicircular fanlight (glazed panelled vestibule door); doorcase with deeply chamfered reveals and hoodmould breaking over square date plaque, rosette label stops; COUNTY CONSTABULARY BUILDINGS carved around hoodmould. Single windows to centre bay of 1st and 2nd floors; outer bays of 1st 3 storeys with bipartite windows. Cornice above 2nd floor, wrapping around return walls; single windows to each bay of attic storey, with ashlar gabled dormerheads and finials.

Blank return elevations with gablehead stacks; N gable with single attic window.

4-pane timber sash and case windows; plate glass to bipartites. Coped stacks, grey slates.
