Alexander Cullen, 1899. 2-storey square-plan, 11-bay (12-bay to side elevations) free Renaissance-style public offices. Cream ashlar sandstone, rubble to rear, slate roof. Channelled basement, cill course to ground floor (and 1st floor at side elevations), large keystones to ground floor windows with continuous band course, architraved windows to 1st floor with corbelled cill course to front elevation; plain frieze, entilled and corbelled cornice; paired, mannered giant Ionic pilasters to pedimented angle pavilions, pediments pierced by glazed oculi; some remaining cast-iron rectangular rainwater good with fleur-de-lis decoration at heads. W (FRONT) ELEVATION: slightly advanced bay at ground floor centre, round-headed keystoned doorcase with small flanking windows, pulvinated frieze with triglyphs and massive consoled broken pediment; corniced window to 1st floor surmounted by achievement of arms and flanked by smaller segmentally-pedimented windows; 2 windows to left and right; slightly advanced 2-bay pavilions to outer left and right.
S ELEVATION: 8 bays to centre with windows to ground and 1st floor; slightly advanced 2-bay pavilions advanced to left and right.
N ELEVATION: as S elevation but with single storey pedimented porch to left re-entrant.
E ELEVATION: plain; modern fire escape.
INTERIOR: main entrance hall, round-headed arches with mosaic domed ceiling panels at ground floor; massive ashlar imperial staircase with turned balusters: pilastered ashlar stairwell with decorative plaster frieze and compartmentalised coomb ceiling; stained glass stair windows. GATEPIERS AND LAMPSTANDARDS: 5 ashlar gatepiers to front elevation (6th to far right removed), large decorative cast-iron lampstandards surmount pair flanking front entrance, iron railings missing.
This building was formerly Middle Ward District Offices at Hamilton Burgh. Stacks removed 1993.
