A Pre-Reformation cross existed probably from the reign of
David I when the town was founded, until 1693, when a new
cross was built. In 1880 the present cross was gifted by
David and John Bernard of Holme House. On top of the 25 ft
red sandstone pillar is the Haddington goat: crest of donors
and the Lion of Scotland at castellated style pedestal.
