Description

J M McLaren, architect. 1877-78, substantial, asymmetrical
Baronial house. 2 storeys and attic. Bull-nosed rubble with
tooled dressings, deep battered plinth. Entrance in drum
tower which rises to 2nd floor topped with boldly corbelled
balustrade, boldly projecting semi-octagonal bay to left
with decorative detailing and facetted roof with weather
vane. Large wallhead stack at left. Low single-storey and
attic wing to E, W-facing facade twin gabled with 2-storey
canted window in S. bay, etched glass in windows. Windows
either transomed or cross design. Slate roofs, tall stacks
with curved angles and cornices.

corniced capstones.

Built for John Fairley. Illustrated in THE BRITISH ARCHITECT

1877. This house and Avondhu were the first independent

designs by McLaren.
