Description

Thomson and Sandilands, c1892-6, asymmetrical 2-storey house in French Renaissance style with Scottish Baronial details in red sandstone. Base course, thin stringcourse above ground floor lintel, and at 1st floor cill, eaves cornice

PRINCIPAL ELEVATION: 3-bay, asymmetrical with recessed central doorway; left bay bowed at ground floor, corbelled to canted bay at 1st floor, bipartite windows at centre surmounted by finialed pediment, and pyramidal roof, single windows in flanks of bay. Bipartite at 1st floor above doorway. Tripartite window at ground to right surmounted by balustraded parapet which continues above doorway. Bipartite window at 1st floor right surmounted by finialed pediment. Gambrelled roof to right and central long and low, 6-light dormer, additional skylight near ridge. W ELEVATION: 4-bay, asymmetrical; advanced crow-stepped gabled bay with mullioned bipartites; to right borad and shallwo advanced bay at ground with balustraded parapet, dies and ball finials, obscured by later iron fire-escape. Gambrel roof with jerkin head and 3-light window inset, deep eaves with barge boards having slightly protruding purlin ends. E ELEVATION: 3-bay, symmetrical largelyi plain elevation. 2 single windows (now doors) at outer edges of ground floor, pedimented semi-dormer at centre flanked by slightly tapering chimney stacks. Roof as in W elevation.

REAR ELEVATION: 4-bay, asymmetrical; left bay mullioned tripartite at ground, mullioned bipartite at first floor, advanced crow-stepped gable stair bay with tall arched window, simple wooden tracery, out buildings to right.
