1959-60, Gillespie Kidd and Coia. Long church on a tight, steep hillside site. 7-bay rectangular-plan church with narrow 7-bay apse continuous with main body, tall, virtually detached cloche of sacristy, Scandinavian inspiration and circular to N. Reinforced concrete with brick infill panels. Lighting mainly be clerestorey windows except for mainly glazed E gable and final bay before apse. Wide doorway in E, cross-finialled, gable with bowed brick baptistry to S, latter under rectangular canopy. Apse with shallow 3-bay, W projection.
CLOCHE: skeletal frame with platforms and bells hung under concrete roof, weathervane.
BAPTISTRY: circular with clerestorey lighting.
INTERIOR: tall, concrete wall columns swelling at top to support a ridged vault, encircle nave and apse. Between columns brick panels below a narrow clerestorey. Chapels project from side aisles. Above the aisles broad concrete beam providing base for ingenious stations of the Cross frieze Benno Schotz. Sanctuary lamp by Schotz. Seating designed by Coia. Altar Mexican onyx.
The architect and sculptor were models for figures in the frieze. The design partly derived from Auguste Perret's church at Raincy also partly owes its origin to the form of top-lit engine works. Unfortunate extension to N.
