Description

Robert A Bryden, circa 1905, imposing cruciform plan, 3-storey board school with classical/baroque details. Red sandstone ashlar rusticated plinth, channelled at ground floor for central W facing section. Sash and case windows, slate roof.

MAIN W FRONT: central wide pedimented bay; 4-light window at ground; giant Ionic columns with utter channelled piers rise through 1st and 2nd floors, "Garrioch School" inscribed on blind balcony/plinth; 4-light 1st floor window, stylised venetian window at 2nd, with giant keystone, pediment over with coved tympanum. 2 flanking bays stepped back, and balustraded cill course and cornice to each floor bipartite windows, 2 further similarly detailed bays to each side, each stepped back and wider as they step out; outer bays each with arched door in pilastered and balustraded doorpiece (boys and girls).

N AND S ELEVATION: each with tripartite and tall Diocletian window lighting stair, 1 further bay and 2 narrower stepped back.

E ELEVATION: gabled, regularly fenestrated with tall, square corniced stack attached towards N.

GATEPIERS AND RAILINGS: variety of near-square-plan gatepiers with pedimented or arched and domed cap detail; wrought-iron railings and gates.
