Description

James Sellars, 1880. Severe classical triumphal arch. Cream sandstone ashlar, banded courses to roadside.

ARCHWAY: monumental; round-headed, keystoned arch to roadside with moulded surround and impost course, recessed at centre, flanked by Ionic columns in antis. Outer piers with pilastered panels carved above impost level, bearing simple oval motifs. Full entablature with cornice and substantial blocking course, recessed at centre. Rear elevation spared adornment and articulation; moulded archway at centre, narrow piers flaniking, and blocking course flush with wallpane. Former rectangular-plan lodges, slightly advanced from triumphal arch to roadside, demolished (1991); remnants to dwarf wall level flanking arch.

GATES AND RAILINGS: circa 1880. Decorative 2-leaf wrought- and cast-iron gates with scrolkl ornament and embossed panels (Biblical text). Railings similarly detailed, with pilasters and paterae frieze.

Statement of Interest

Further, more substantial lodges flanking the above have also been removed.
