Country house designed by James Ramsay, architect and landscape gardener in Edinburgh. Built 1799, for Walter Ewing Macrae. Some late 19th/early 20th century additions. Now (1992) and Old Folk's Home. Classical; principally 2 storeys, built on slope, full basement storey to rear (north). South front a shallow U-plan with (?Kinross-inspired) giant clasping pilasters at wings; paired stacks suggest a basically tripartite plan; large added central porch said to be not all one build (Williamson, op cit, p497). Plain regular bays at east flank, shallow-bowed centre to north front, and Serlian windows.
Original service court at west flank incorporating low north-facing wing with heavily-rusticated stonework; heightened 2/3-storeys probably early 20th century, and deepened to south on plan by carrying new south wall on massive stone pillars.
Original house built of pinned rubble, ashlar dressings, sash and case windows, slate roof; additions in ashlar.
