Description

Library by J R Rhind, 1904-06, combined with baths and washhouse by A B MacDonald, city engineer.

LIBRARY is a 2-storey block with dome at corner, lower single storey range adjoins fronting Tollcross Road. Red ashlar with some decorative sculpture, mostly channelled at ground corner block with arcaded 1st floor windows with pilasters, long front to Helenvale Street, square-headed openings in corner bay, blocked cornice, parapet conceals roof; low range has pedimented entrance (Sculpture by Kellock Brown), reading room to left with large window combined thermal over tripartite. Original glazing throughout.

BATHS AND WASHHOUSE with 3-storey front to Tollcross Road; also red ashlar, renaissance ornament, mullioned windows, 3 pilastered bays, symmetrical above ground floor, parapetted wall-head; ranges to rear mostly red brick. Low range set back from Helenvale Street.
