Description

Sinclair and Ballantine, 1905-7; library, near symmetrical with outer gables; Edwardian baroque with sculptured detail; Post Office added to W 1910-11 in similar style and material (light-coloured Bannockburn ashlar) but losing symmetry. Original glazing throughout with multi-paned upper sashes; some acid-etched panels with art nouveau ornament. 3 storeys. LIBRARY: gables have vertical strips, (granite) coolumned porch at right (gated, with good wrought-iron work) with canted window rising 2 storeys above, area between gables almost wholly glazed at lower 2 floors with 3-light windows with columned mullions (Doric then Ionic); horizontal strings and cornices; high quality interior with marble entrance hall, columns with dectorative capitals, cornice plasterwork; rear range has single storey 7 (5 + 2) - bay elevation to King Street with roof dome over reading room. POST OFFICE also has columned mullions, porch at left.
