Description

H and D Barclay. Opened 1879. 2-storey 12-by 8-bay Italianate
ashlar school. Arched doorway in 2 central advanced
pedimented bays. Channelled masonry surrounds door with 2
mask roundels. Ground floor windows roll moulded with carved
cills decorated frieze and cornices. Cornice over ground
floor. 1st floor recessed aproned windows between Doric
pilasters bearing shields. Projecting eaves with mutule
cornice. Slate roof with a glazed light to central hall and 2
stacks. E and W elevations identical. N and S elevations,
8-bay, similar windows grouped 2-4-2.
Interior central hall with 2 stairs and balcony to upper
classrooms.
Janitor's house: Italianate cottage, 1879, 2-storey ashlar.
Dormer heads to 1st floor windows, bargeboards, stack and
swept slate roof.
Heavy cast-iron perimeter railings with 3 small pedimented
ashlar entrances.

Statement of Interest

The first Board School in Glasgow to be designed on the

Barclay's principle of the Central Hall Plan.
