Description

Frank Stirrat, 1889-90. 4-storey, 5-bay red ashlar-fronted printing works.

Ground floor altered except shouldered arched door. Pilasters rise through 1st and 2nd floors. 1st, 3rd and 5th windows are bipartite with pilaster mullions. Panels between 1st and 2nd floor windows bear masks of Caxton, Guttenberg, Burns, Scott and Mr and Mrs Cossar, dated 1890.

Entablature over 2nd floor. Small 3rd floor windows, 3 bipartite. Parapet with inscription "Press Buildings". Side elevations blank brick. Brick rear has asymmetrical windows. Slate roof. 2 gable-end stacks. "Press Office" mosaic in floor of entrance.

Statement of Interest

Closed 1983. John Cossar Ltd printed the Govan Chronicle, the Govan Press, the Renfrew Press and the Clydebank Press. John Cossar died soon after the opening of his new building, and from 1890 to 1926 the business was managed by his widow, an important Govanite. Printing sheds at rear demolished.
