Dated 1914. 3-storey shipyard design offices built for Alexander
Stephens of Linthouse. Reinforced-concrete-framed with red
brick walling; frame uprights treated as giant pilaster
strips, with cornice above ground floor, main cornice
with frieze; flat roof, wall-head balustrade with
intermediate piers. Street elevation divided into 7 3-
window bays (3-bay flanks).
Offices in 3 south-most bays, larger windows in other
bays for workshops; entrance in 3rd bay, with
contrasting rendered panel, corniced door with
sidelights, fanlight over cornice, cartouche with date.
Multi-paned windows all original.
Modern glazed stair tower added to N in late 1990's.
The Considere reinforced concrete system was employed. In 1920 it was decided to demolish the old mansion-house which had served as offices for forty-five years and as a canteen and Welfare centre for five. The building which had been found to be too small, was hampering work in the yard. The present administrative block, with its frontage to Homefauld Road, had been occupied since July, 1915. This is a building of three storeys which contains a few links with the old house. Some of the solid mahogany panelled doors and a fire-place from it are in position in the new. The portico of the mansion-house was presented to the Elder Park, Govan, where it was re-erected.
