Sir J E Boehm, sculpture; erected 1888 (signed and
dated). Statue, pedestrian bronze of John Elder with
model of his "patent compound inverted vertical steam
engine" which was patented by Randolph and Elder in the
early 1850's. Tall granite pedestal with classical
detailing and plaques. Enclosed by circular granite
coping with piers and iron chains; also simple iron
fence.
It was the technological advances made by the above
engine which was in great measure responsible for the
Clyde reaching the forefront of the world shipbuilding
industry. The first vessel built with this engine was
the S S Brandon, launched in 1854.
