James Chalmers, 1898-1900. Free classical, 3-storey and attic
commercial building; 4 x 3 main bays with single corner bay.
Polished red ashlar, faced with polished granite at basement
and partially at ground floor.
ELEVATION TO WATERLOO STREET: arcaded ground floor with
Corinthian pilastrade, central arched entrance with
double-leaf door, wrought-iron grille above, leading to
double-leaf glazed door with carved timber tympanum; flanking
pilasters with granite shafts supporting standing figure
sculpture at 1st floor.
1ST FLOOR WINDOWS: elaborately sculpted 3-light aedicule
window with pediment and flanking obelisk piers in W bay, 3
6-light stone mullioned and transomed windows in E bays,
Ionic column mullioned, recessed windows above with
keyblocked, blind arches over. Stylised aedicule windows in
E bay, repeated above blind. Balustraded parapet.
SW polygonal, semi-extruded corner tower; canted 1st floor
with shaped-lintel windows, 2-light windows above in deep
reveals flanked by pilaster strips at 2nd and 3rd floor, 4th
floor single light window with bowed cill, arched window
above. Semi-circular aedicules to right and left with
barley-sugar columns, arched openings in outer bays. Shaped
cope.
E RETURN: arched, keyblocked ground floor windows with carved
wooden transomes. Simple windows set in pilaster strips
above. 4th floor raised parapet with stylised open aedicule.
INTERIOR: partially anta columned entrance hall.
