Description

John Baird I, begun 1840. Classical terraced block of 2-storey and basement, 3-bay houses raised to 3-storey at 2 centre houses and at flatted ends. Eastern pavilion demolished and replaced. 44 bays arranged 5-15-6-15; 6 return bays to Clifton Street arranged 1-1-2-2; 1st return bay blind. Ashlar, partly painted, channelled at ground floor at western pavilion and at basement in main block with flat arches over windows. Each entrance in main front at head of steps oversailing basement area; Ionic columned porticos with Doric responds and fanlights at No 7, 8, and 14; ramped architraved, consoled and corniced doorways with fanlights, recessed pilasters at Nos 2-6 and 9-13; 2 pilastered corniced doorpieces at Nos 2 and 4 Clifton Street. Basement band.

Eastern ground floor windows in architraves, corbelled cills. 1st floor cill band; corniced windows pedimented in central section. 3rd floor cill band. Eaves cornice; balustraded parapet (partially removed) in lower sections, parapet in raised sections. Some set back dormers. End and ridge stacks.

INTERIOR: No 14 corniced vestibule with consoled band. No 13 Greek Ionic hall screen. Corinthian carved timber screen at 1st floor - in most houses. Cast-iron spear-headed railings.
