Robert Black, circa 1830. Restrained classical 4-storey, 12-bay tenement, symmetrical above ground. Painted ashlar. Court pends asymmetrically placed to left of centre and far right of centre. Shop fronts altered at ground; Art Deco frontage to No 73-75. 6 centre bays
slightly advanced, with balustraded parapet, broken by round-arched and end dies. Cornice above ground floor and main cornice; cill course to 2nd floor. Raised margins to 1st floor windows, consoled pediments to 3
windows left of centre, removed from 3 right of centre; cornices retained to centre 6 at 2nd floor.
SOUTH EXCHANGE COURT (NOS 1-4 INCLUSIVE): simpler of the 2 courts.
S SIDE: 18-bay. 3-storey and basement. Ashlar, channelled at ground with 3 doorways. With steps and consoled cornices; architraved and corniced 1st floor windows to 3 penultimate bays to left and right. Cornice to ground floor (as 1st floor cill course), and main cornice. Slightly recessed bay to E, with stairwell to Queen Street offices. Blank rear, with 2 windows to Springfield Court.
N SIDE: 17 widely grouped bays, forming rear of Royal Exchange Court.
ROYAL EXCHANGE COURT (NOS 1-5 INCLUSIVE): name incised over pend on Queen Street.
S SIDE (1, 2 AND 3); 21-bay. 3-storey and basement. Ashlar, channelled at ground with cornice (as 1st floor cill course) and main cornice. Pilastered doorpieces to centre of each 7-bay block, outer corniced centre pedimented each with steps. Shallow segmental arched ground floor windows; 3 centre 1st floor windows of each block with consoled cornices. Rear onto South Exchange Court. Recessed bay to E with stairwell to Queen Street offices.
N SIDE: 17-bay. Rear elevations of 5-19 Royal Exchange Square, with pend off-centre to E. Channelled ashlar at ground; 1st floor cill cornice. Variety of glazing patterns, in small-pane and plate-glass form to sash and case windows. Wallhead and mutual gable stacks. Slates.
An early and major commission for Black (1800-69), later joined by James Salmon Sen in partnership. Royal Exchange Court formerly had its own numbers (1-3 inclusive) as did South Exchange Court (1-4 inclusive).
